History[edit]
When Gaur was the capital of Bengal, when an epidemic broke out there, many people from that area fled in fear and panic. At that time a family came to Niamatpur village of present Niamatpur upazila and started living. Then the name of this place was Hokmadanga. It is said that when a pious dervish came to this Hokmadanga, the ancestors of Niamatpur presented Nazar Niamat and various food items as gifts in his name. He was very happy to see the delicacies and said that the place where Allah has bestowed so many blessings should have a beautiful name. So he named the place Niamatpur instead of Hokmadanga.[1]
